Upcycling is the process of turning ugly and surplus produce, including by-products, into new food products that not only reduce waste, but also create income for producers and support communities.
Food waste is a major source of emissions. When fruit is wasted, it breaks down and produces methane, a gas that speeds up global warming. In Europe, about 30% of fruit is wasted and half of that comes from peel and pulp. We can reduce our impact by using ugly and surplus whole fruit.
We combat food waste by changing how we see and use food, sourcing only 100% European apples and giving them a second chance when traditional retailers reject them because of size, blemishes or colour.
Our apple chips help save both apples and the resources used to grow them. To date, we have diverted almost one ton of fruit into sustainable snacks that taste just as good as conventional brands.
Our apples come from orchards in northern Portugal during the harvest season between August and October.
We use fruit that doesn’t go through standard processing, so it takes more work and sorting. Most food systems are built for speed and efficiency, not for reducing waste, which can make producing upcycled products, like ours cost slightly more than conventional ones.
Each purchase saves on average 4 kg of apples, including 3 m³ of water and 1 kilo of CO₂ emissions per 24-pack of chips.
Yes. They have 16g of fiber per 100g — up to 30% more than comparable chips on the market that are often peeled.
